Philosophy
ABR is a leader in the environmental research and
consulting community. We seek to use our strengths—including
ecological restoration, wildlife and fisheries ecology,
and environmental assessment—to promote solid,
useful research for today’s environmental
problems. We are committed to excellence in scientific
research and maintaining our core values. ABR measures
its success by a triple bottom line—economic,
social, and environmental stability.
ABR is working toward its own sustainability by reducing or mitigating its own
environmental impacts, conserving resources, and following a philosophy of responsible
corporate growth. We hope to nurture relationships with clients who support and/or
practice the concept of sustainability and resource conservation, who seek to reduce their
environmental impacts and make efforts to restore ecosystems, who practice social
responsibility, and who search for creative and responsible research as key management
and conservation tools.
Triple Bottom Line
Economic Viability
ABR services have been used by a great number of
clients, and two features of our client base are
also indicators of our success. Many are long-term
clients who we have worked with us for 10–20
years. Second, each year we add new clients who
expand our range of experience in terms of region,
expertise, and challenges. Since our founding, we
have enjoyed success that allows ABR to record growth
while increasing and improving our employee’s
benefit packages, including profit- sharing.
Social Responsibility
We support ABR employees who invest their time
in humanitarian endeavors, including paying half
of their volunteer time up to 8 hrs/month. ABR also
donates 7.5% of our annual profits to charities,
and we provide hands-on support to groups like Habitat
for Humanity. Our retirement account is totally
invested in Socially Responsible Investments (SRI).
Through our program, Bioshare, we provide for sabbaticals
and costs for working with organizations needing
extra support. Some of our assistance has contributed
to a study of primates in El Salvador, supported
the work of wildlife biologists in Papua New Guinea,
helped build homes in Madagascar, and taught children
in local schools in Costa Rica. ABR’s intern
program helps college students who have a strong
interest in environmental sciences and who are eager
to learn about sustainability in a work environment.
Environmental Stewardship
One of ABR’s corporate challenges is to determine its environmental impacts (or
footprints) and reduce them. We’ve measured our carbon footprint, for example,
and have tried to mitigate impacts of green house gas emissions by investing in
renewable resources, purchasing green tags,
supporting employee purchase of hybrid vehicles,
and compensating employees for carpooling and
using alternative transportation to work. As other
role model companies have said “we are on a
journey to sustainability” (The Collins’
Companies).
