Bob Burgess has studied the behavioral ecology of terrestrial vertebrates, including arctic foxes, lemmings and voles, arctic shorebirds and passerines, and waterfowl. He has managed several long-term ecological studies in northern and interior Alaska and has field experience in the Pacific Northwest. Most recently, his focus has been on terrestrial ecology, emphasizing tundra rehabilitation, habitat restoration, damage assessment, and ecological risk assessment, including a multi-year ecological risk assessment on the Chena River that involved extensive coordination with the U.S. Army and other contractors.
