Ecological Restoration and Land Rehabilitation

land reclamation at the ekati diamond mine, northern territories, canada. (1995–2005)

Client: BHP Billiton, Inc.

ABR provided a preliminary reclamation research program for the EIS prepared for the mine, and developed a long-term reclamation research program that involved conducting a variety of experiments testing top-dressings and different plant materials for promoting revegetation of mine disturbances. Tasks included overseeing fertilization, seeding, and planting efforts; monitoring of soil and vegetation response in reclaimed areas; and assessing the potential of local plant species for use in revegetation. ABR also provided recommendations and implemented revegetation plans for abandoned sites and wrote a review of performance criteria to be used as part of the evaluation of mine reclamation at closure. LAND REHABILITATION STUDIES IN THE KUPARUK OILFIELD, ALASKA. (1989–present)

Client: ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc.

ABR is conducting a number of long-term land rehabilitation, revegetation, and bioremediation projects in the Kuparuk Oilfield, on Alaska’s North Slope. Many of these projects focus on rehabilitation of gravel substrates, the most common surface disturbance on the North Slope.  Studies are testing revegetation and bioremediation techniques at sites of small spills of oil and brine.  Use of sewage sludge to amend gravel substrates for enhancement of revegetation is being studied.  Several experimental plots are being monitored to determine the relative efficacy of different combinations of fertilizer, soil amendments, and the long-term survivorship of various native plants cultivars.  Wetland creation techniques are being evaluated at experimental sites (created ponds) and at natural tundra areas revegetated with aquatic grasses.  For more information on these studies contact jkidd@abrinc.com.

BIOREMEDIATION AND TUNDRA RESTORATION AT A CRUDE OIL SPILL SITE IN THE KUPARUK OILFIELD, NORTHERN ALASKA. (1990–1994)

Client: ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc.

participated in the cleanup of an old (ca. 1969–1970) oil spill at an exploratory drill site (S.E. Eileen) along the Kuparuk River in northern Alaska.  The cleanup required a detailed agency-approved remediation plan incorporating both off-site incineration and in-situ bioremediation.  Site assessment delineated the extent and level of contamination and identified what hydrocarbon constituents remained.  Plant cultivation efforts focused on restoring wetland vegetation.  In-situ bioremediation resulted in 90% reduction in hydrocarbon levels. ABR assisted ARCO in site closure negotiations with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation.    For more information on this study contact Torre Jorgenson, tjorgenson@abrinc.com.

ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION OF abandoned oil field facilities and exploratory well sites, north slope, ALASKA. (2000–present)

Client: BP Exploration (Alaska), Inc.

ABR is involved in a long-term North Slope land rehabilitation program that includes preparing and implementing rehabilitation plans for facilitating the establishment of arctic wetland and upland plant communities on oil field disturbances. The program involves developing revegetation performance standards; providing recommendations for enhancing the wildlife characteristics of rehabilitated areas; identifying and applying appropriate plant materials; monitoring soil and vegetation response; and monitoring the surface and thermal stability of rehabilitated sites.  For more information on this study contact jkidd@abrinc.com.
