ABR has pioneered the
development of mobile radar
laboratories to monitor birds. We
use state-of-the-art radar and
night-vision equipment, which can
be mounted on trucks or
transported by boat or air to
inaccessible sites. We can monitor
birds near proposed facilities, such
as wind farms, to determine movement rates, flight altitudes, flight
directions, and flight behaviors. We also have used our radar systems
to evaluate movements of bats in Hawaii and in the eastern US. Our
radars have been used in Alaska, Hawaii, the Midwest, the Pacific
Northwest, New York, Texas, Maryland, West Virginia, and
Colorado, as well as overseas in Israel and Spain.
Our specific services in this area include the following:
Migration Monitoring
Site Assessment for Facility Placement (e.g., powerlines,
towers, wind turbines)
Airport Bird Hazard Evaluation
Surveys for Endangered or Threatened Birds and Bats and
Nocturnal Bird Activity
Pre- and Postconstruction Studies at Wind Energy Facilities
Marbled Murrelet, Hawaiian Petrel, and Newell’s Shearwater Surveys
