Aquatic Ecology

Position: Field Biologist—Aquatic Ecology


Status: Seasonal position (appointment may range 3–5 months)


Job Summary: ABR is seeking an Aquatic Ecology biologist to lead field studies in streams throughout Alaska, primarily supporting the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring program for the Bureau of Land Management.


Job Responsibilities:


  • Conduct field surveys of aquatic habitats in freshwater environments

  • Assist in mobilization and demobilization of field gear at the office

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy

  • Enter and proof data, primarily on mobile electronic devices

  • Travel in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, and in boats


Qualifications:


  • Familiar with aquatic macroinvertebrate collections/identification, water quality studies, or experience with stream habitat geomorphology and/or surface hydrology surveys.

  • Meticulous in collecting and recording data.

  • Able to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments.

  • Inspire and work cooperatively with others, provide guidance for team members to work independently when needed, and maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.

  • Minimum of B.S. in a discipline related to fisheries, aquatic ecology, or hydrology is required. Previous leadership experience in aquatic research is preferred.


Work Period: Work begins in mid-May and concludes in early September; field deployments may require up to 14 days of consecutive work.


Wage: Depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field; candidates must be based in Anchorage during the period of employment.
