Aquatic Ecology

FIELD TECHNICIANS – AQUATIC ECOLOGY


STATUS:  Seasonal positions (appointments may range 3–7 months)


JOB SUMMARY: ABR is seeking aquatic ecology technicians to assist with aquatic ecology studies in streams, lakes, and marine waters throughout Alaska.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct field surveys of aquatic habitats in freshwater and marine environments under supervision of Research Biologists and Senior Scientists

  • Assist in mobilization and demobilization of field gear at the office

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy

  • Data entry and proofing, primarily on mobile electronic devices

  • Traveling in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, and in boats will be required.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with aquatic macroinvertebrate collections/identification, water quality studies, or experience with stream habitat geomorphology and/or surface hydrology surveys.

  • Meticulous in collecting and recording data

  • Ability to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments.

  • Able to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.

  • Minimum of 2 years of undergraduate studies in a discipline related to fisheries or aquatic ecology is required and previous experience in aquatic research is preferred.

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.


WORK PERIOD: Work begins in mid-May and concludes in late August; field deployments may require up to 21 days of consecutive work.


WAGE:  Depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field; candidates must be based in Anchorage during the period of employment.
