John began his Alaskan ornithological career in 1994 while at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and has been conducting wildlife research ever since. He joined ABR in 1998 and has gained extensive experience throughout Alaska in both terrestrial and marine biological sciences.

John has conducted numerous surveys on raptors, waterfowl, songbirds, seabirds, and shorebirds, often with a focus on species that are protected, threatened, or endangered. He has performed waterfowl capture and migration research as well as eagle permitting support (Eagle Conservation Plans), collision risk modeling, and fatality monitoring.

In addition to ornithological studies, John has a wide range of experience conducting mammal investigations. These include small-mammal trapping, caribou surveys, marine mammal surveys, remote-camera monitoring, and fox-den monitoring.

Whether his focus is on avian or mammal investigations in the field, he is skilled in aerial, ground, and boat-based survey techniques, GPS/GIS technology, radar ornithology, behavioral/disturbance monitoring, wildlife capture and marking, video, still and time-lapsed photography, and prey analyses. In addition to his field work, John has served on ABR's Board of Directors and has over 16 years of project management experience.
