Field Technician - Wildlife Ecology

STATUS
Seasonal positions (appointments may range 1–4 months). Work begins in December and concludes in May; field deployments may require up to 3 consecutive weeks of work. Work will generally be 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off and the total number of work periods is negotiable.
JOB SUMMARY
ABR is seeking several technicians to support caribou monitoring during construction activities at project locations in northern Alaska. These monitors will look for caribou in the area of construction activities and record caribou behavior and distribution of caribou observed in the area. Travel by snowmachine may be required. There may be opportunities to participate in ABR’s other wildlife, aquatics, and vegetation projects.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitor for caribou and record activities and behavior.
Enter and proof data, primarily on mobile electronic devices.
Assist in field gear acquisition, mobilization, and demobilization.
Travel by truck or snowmachine to construction locations.
Participate in job-specific field-protocol training.
Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy. Must be able to complete Mine Safety training.
Stay in industrial camps and work 12 hour days.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience conducting field research, expertise in wildlife identification is required; experience with caribou or large animal biology preferred.
Be meticulous in collecting and recording data.
Ability to conduct field work involving hiking and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry up to 14 kg (30 lbs) and work 12 hours per day during field deployments in bear country.
Ability to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.
Familiarity with snowmachines, ATVs, or other field transport methods is a plus.
Experience in data entry and management is preferred.
B.S. in the life sciences (wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields) and/or have previous experience as a field biology technician, preferably in the Arctic.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.
WAGE
$22–26/h, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Transportation to the site, room and board provided only while in the field.
