Senior Environmental Specialist

Biological Resources

— This position is based in Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska. —

ABR is seeking a senior-level environmental specialist with expertise in National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licensing, and/or biological resource permitting to join our team of biology and ecology subject-matter experts (SMEs). 


  • Prepare or edit standard sections of NEPA documents, including purpose and need, alternatives, affected environment, environmental consequences, and cumulative effects.

  • Employ a solid working knowledge of current Council of Environmental Quality guidelines and associated methods of environmental impact assessment under NEPA, including climate change and cumulative effects.

  • Communicate effectively with project proponents, prime and subcontractors, state and federal resource management agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Participate in agency and public scoping for projects, including stakeholder engagement, public speaking, and meeting presentations.

  • Manage internal and external subcontractor teams of SMEs and technical analysts working on NEPA projects.

  • Assist with environmental field studies and related permitting.

  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for environmental assessment work.


  • Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities, and strong leadership, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Highly motivated team player with excellent attention to detail and organization, who also maintains a focus on the big picture.

  • Experience as a NEPA technical analyst in one or more disciplines such as wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, vegetation, wetlands, and/or threatened and endangered species.

  • Experience with the environmental consulting industry in Alaska and with project management preferred.

  • At least 7 years of professional experience working both independently and collaboratively on NEPA, FERC, or similar environmental permitting projects.

  • A bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or other relevant field, Master’s degree preferred.

HOURS: Approximately 35 hours/week; occasionally more as needed.

WAGE AND BENEFITS: $45+ per hour, depending on experience, with a generous benefit package and flexible work model.
