Seasonal Field Technician—Vegetation/Wetlands

— Fairbanks or Anchorage, Alaska —

SUMMARY

ABR is seeking seasonal vegetation/wetlands technicians to support remote field research projects throughout Alaska. The position may range 1–4 months. Work typically begins in late May or early June and concludes in September. Field deployments may require up to 21 consecutive days of work. Workloads between field deployments may vary.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in collecting vegetation and soils data for long-term monitoring studies, wetland delineations, mapping projects, and land rehabilitation studies.

  • Assist in field mobilization and demobilization, including managing field sampling gear.

  • Record data using tablets with customized data-collection apps.

  • Review data for errors and completeness, in field and office settings.

  • Participate in job-specific field-protocol training.

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s safety policy.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong background in the identification of Alaskan vascular plants; expertise with nonvascular plants is helpful.

  • Experience with quantitative vegetation sampling, field wetland determinations, and soil description.

  • Experience with standardized vegetation sampling protocols, such as Bureau of Land Management Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) or U.S. Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to carry up to 50 lbs., excavate soil pits up to 50 cm deep, and work outdoors 10–12 hours per day in remote locations in bear country.

  • Ability to travel in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, and/or small boats.

  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload and challenging field conditions.

  • B.S. degree in biology, soils, environmental science, or related field and/or previous experience as a field technician.

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.

  • Valid driver’s license is required.


WAGE

$20–28/hour, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
