Research Biologist—Aquatic Ecology/Fisheries

JOB SUMMARY
ABR has an immediate opening for an Aquatic Ecologist/Fishery Biologist to assist with projects related to fisheries, aquatic ecology, and water quality projects in streams, lakes, and marine waters throughout Alaska. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience with, or knowledge of, fish and macroinvertebrate biology, water quality and/or hydrology studies, and experience with data management and technical report production.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct field surveys for fish, aquatic invertebrates, and aquatic habitats.
Manage logistics for field work in both road-accessible and remote locations.
Participate in safety training and maintain safety documentation.
Lead field crews of 2–4 people.
Manage aquatic ecology laboratory, including supplies, equipment calibration, and organization for field and laboratory studies.
Process fish tissues (e.g., otoliths, stomach contents) and identify voucher specimens of fish.
Collect and process invertebrate samples.
Assist with technical reporting, i.e., data summaries, figure production, and technical writing.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience conducting field surveys using a variety of aquatic sampling techniques and expertise in fish or macroinvertebrate identification is desired.
Water quality sampling or hydrology experience is also desirable.
Ability to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings, sometimes in inclement weather is required.
Traveling in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, on snow machines, and in boats will be required.
Experience in data management and analysis is required, preferably in PostgreSQL and R.
Ability to synthesize information into high-quality reports for a technical audience is also desirable.
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
A valid driver’s license and a B.S. in fisheries biology, aquatic ecology, or related fields required, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience.
An M.S. in a related field is preferred. Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required.
WORK PERIOD
Approximately 20–40 hours/week depending on the time of year; field work will involve longer hours and as many as 21 days of consecutive work, mostly during the summer and fall.
WAGE AND BENEFITS
Wage dependent on experience; eligible for full benefits after 3 months of employment.
