Research Biologist —
Wildlife Ecology, Hawai‘i

STATUS

20–35 hours per week (variable, depending on project needs).


JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a versatile Conservation and Regulatory Specialist with a solid foundation in wildlife ecology and a passion for community-based stewardship. In this role, you will support a supervising specialist in serving as a liaison between private landowners and regulatory agencies, helping clients manage properties to protect sensitive habitats or wildlife. You will provide technical expertise and end-to-end assistance for clients engaging in conservation, ensuring they remain in compliance with environmental laws while fostering positive outcomes for native biodiversity. Client care and external communications will be coordinated under the guidance of your supervisor.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assess presence of endangered, threatened, or at-risk native species and critical habitat.

  • Support the preparation and submission of state and federal permit applications. You will assist in ensuring client activities align with the Endangered Species Act and equivalent state-level protections.

  • Under the direction of senior staff, participate in agency consultation meetings, attend site visits, and assist clients in implementing agency recommendations.

  • Contribute to the design and development of Habitat Conservation Plans and Safe Harbor Agreements. This includes assisting with the identification of potential impacts and helping research science-based mitigation and monitoring strategies.

  • Assist in conducting job-specific training for client staff on monitoring protocols, predator control, and impact minimization (such as lighting adjustments) to support on-the-ground compliance.

  • Gather, organize, and review field data; assist in drafting technical reports for downed wildlife or habitat health; and maintain documentation for regulatory review.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience identifying Hawaiian vegetation and wildlife, particularly listed species.

  • Experience with, or understanding of, Hawai‘i state laws and local politics.

  • Ability to conduct field work involving walking/light hiking and physical labor in darkness.

  • Demonstrated people skills and ability to be professional in a guest-facing environment.

  • Experience in data management is required, preferably using GIS, PostgreSQL, or R.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • B.S. or M.S. in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields required with a minimum of 2 years’ experience or equivalent, preferably in Hawai’i.

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.


WAGE

$32–37/h, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Eligible for full benefits after 3 months of employment.
