Seasonal Field Technician—Aquatic Ecology

—This position is based in Anchorage, Alaska—

Seasonal positions (appointments may range 3–5 months). Work is expected to begin in mid-May and conclude in early September; field deployments may require up to 14 days of consecutive work.


SUMMARY:

ABR is seeking biologists passionate about aquatic ecology to conduct field studies in streams throughout Alaska. These Anchorage-based positions primarily support the Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring program for the Bureau of Land Management. We are considering both field technician and crew lead positions.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in job-specific, field protocol training (May 2026, Anchorage).

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy.

  • Assist in field gear acquisition, mobilization, and demobilization.

  • Conduct field surveys of aquatic habitats in wadeable streams.

  • For crew leads, inspire and provide guidance for team members to work independently when needed.

  • Enter and proof data, primarily on mobile electronic devices.Travel in helicopters, small fixed-wing aircraft, and boats.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An interest in a career in stream ecology.

  • Able to meticulously collect and record data.

  • Able to conduct field work involving wading and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry heavy field equipment for short distances (up to 22 kg/50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments.

  • Familiar with stream habitat, surface hydrology, or water quality studies.

  • Experience with aquatic macroinvertebrate collections/identification.

  • Ability to work cooperatively on a crew of 2–4 people and maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.

  • A minimum of 4 semesters of coursework in a discipline related to aquatic ecology, fisheries, biology, or hydrology is required.

  • For crew lead candidates, a bachelor’s degree and previous leadership experience in aquatic research is preferred.


WAGE:

$23–25/hr for technicians, $25–28/hr for crew leads, DOE; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field; candidates must be based in Anchorage during the period of employment.
