Seasonal Field Technician—Wildlife

STATUS

Seasonal position (June); timing flexible and may be extended. Possibility of additional opportunities to participate in ABR’s other wildlife, aquatics, and vegetation projects throughout the summer and fall.


SUMMARY

ABR is seeking a technician based in Fairbanks or Anchorage to support ABR’s field studies. Field work will be intermittent, with multiple field stints of up to 2 weeks. The technician will be primarily involved with road-based caribou monitoring in a remote area of Alaska. Additional fieldwork may be possible, including avian nest searching, avian point counts, aerial surveys for caribou, and desktop work in either Fairbanks or Anchorage reviewing wildlife images. There may be opportunities to participate in ABR’s other wildlife, aquatics, and vegetation projects.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct road-based surveys for caribou with a construction crew.

  • Use binoculars, spotting scopes, and/or thermal binoculars to scan for caribou

  • May also be required to travel on foot near the road to determine if caribou are in the area

  • Enter and proof data, primarily on mobile electronic devices or on datasheets.

  • Assist in field gear acquisition, mobilization, and demobilization.

  • Conduct avian nest searching

  • Conduct wildlife image review.

  • Conduct aerial wildlife surveys.

  • Participate in job-specific field-protocol training.

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a field technician is required; experience working independently is preferred.

  • Ability to collect and record meticulous data.

  • Ability to conduct field work involving wading, hiking, and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments in bear country.

  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.

  • Resistance to motion sickness is a plus.

  • Experience with aerial surveys for birds and/or mammals is a plus.

  • Experience in data management is a plus.

  • B.S. in the life sciences (wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields), OR previous experience as a field biology technician, preferably in the Arctic.

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.


WAGE

$20–25/h, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
