Seasonal Field Technician—Avian Ecology

—This position is based in Fairbanks or Anchorage, Alaska—

Seasonal, short-term position (June); possibility of additional opportunities to participate in ABR’s other wildlife, aquatics, and vegetation projects.


SUMMARY

ABR is seeking a technician based in Fairbanks or Anchorage to support a field study. The technician will be involved with a project searching for eider nests at specific locations within an industrial area. Travel in helicopters, boats, and small fixed-wing aircraft may be required. There will be a minimum of 12 work days (15–30 June; 6 days fieldwork, 2 days travel, 2 days training, and 1 day project support). There may be opportunities to participate in ABR’s other wildlife, aquatics, and vegetation projects. Some training time will be required and will take place in May.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct ground-based surveys for eiders as part of a team.

  • Enter and proof data, primarily on mobile electronic devices.

  • Assist in field gear acquisition, mobilization, and demobilization.

  • Participate in job-specific field-protocol training.

  • Participate in safety training and follow ABR’s Safety Policy.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a field technician and expertise in bird identification is required; experience with waterfowl surveys and identifying breeding waterfowl is preferred.

  • Ability collect and record meticulous data.

  • Ability to conduct field work involving wading, hiking, and physical labor in remote settings. Must be able to carry up to 22 kg (50 lbs) and work 10–12 hours per day during field deployments in bear country.

  • Ability to live and work cooperatively with others, to work independently when needed, and to maintain a positive attitude under a heavy workload.

  • Resistance to motion sickness.

  • B.S. in the life sciences (wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or related fields), OR previous experience as a field biology technician, preferably in the Arctic.

  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States is required if selected for hire.


WAGE

$20–25/h, depending on experience; overtime eligible. Room and board provided only while in the field.
