Red Dog Mine Wildlife Radar Tracking
A team led by Joe Welch and Tim Obritshkewitsch conducted a proof-of-concept test in interior Alaska and a site visit to the Red Dog Mine Port Site to evaluate the effectiveness of a marine radar system for detecting and tracking caribou and other large terrestrial mammals on the surrounding tundra.
ABR collaborated closely with software engineers from Nobeltec to calibrate and optimize the TimeZero Coastal Monitoring software, aiming to enhance the radar’s ability to identify and follow animal movement across the landscape.
These proof-of-concept tests provided promising results and indicate that marine radar has the potential to be a powerful tool for detecting and tracking caribou across open tundra. This technology could be used as part of a caribou early detection warning system to help mitigate potential impacts to migrating caribou.
