A team led by John Seigle and Caitlin Forster with support from Peter Detwiler (fieldwork) and Dorte Dissing (GIS) performed lake bathymetry, water chemistry, and fish presence/absence surveys on 30 freshwater lakes within five miles of nearshore oil leases in Harrison Bay, Alaska - west of the Colville River Delta.
These lakes are potential water sources for future oil and gas leasing activities such as the construction of ice roads and in-camp infrastructure needs.
The team completed bathymetry surveys using geopositional sonar equipment to map lake depth and calculate total liquid water volume. Additionally, the crew set gillnets and minnow traps to determine the presence of fish in lakes. Fish presence and type, along with bathymetry data, are essential to obtaining permits for lake-specific water and ice chip withdrawals. ABR also produced a final report for delivery to Alaska Department of Fish and Game to assist in the project’s permitting process.
